EXY auditioned for JYP in 2008, but did not pass. She later trained for five years under Starship Entertainment before debuting as a part of WJSN. In 2012, EXY was part of the lineup for VIVA Girls, a seven-member girl group under Medialine with other members SeolA, 9MUSES' Kyungri, Dalshabet's Woohee, Stellar's Hyoeun, Hello Venus' Lime, and Kiss&Cry's Soyumi. The group unfortunately never debuted because of financial issues. She attended School of Performing Arts Seoul (SOPA) and graduated in 2013. In 2015, she was one of the contestants of Unpretty Rapstar 2, joining in episode 6 before being eliminated in episode 8. She also released a Mixtape in 2015. EXY was revealed to be a member of WJSN on December 21, 2015 when she took part in a cover of Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" along with SeolA, Bona, Dawon, Eunseo, Cheng Xiao, Mei Qi and Dayoung, and was later revealed to be a member of its Sweet Unit along with SeolA and Soobin on December 24, 2015 before debuting with the group as the leader and main rapper on February 25, 2016 with their mini-album Would You Like? and the single "MoMoMo". On May 12, 2021, EXY debuted as a member of WJSN's second sub-unit, WJSN THE BLACK, with the single album "My attitude". On September 14, she was revealed as a member of Cotton Candy, a fictional girl group of JTBC's upcoming television drama Idol: The Coup.
